Graham, this is 3 week old question but since it is still on front page, I thought to comment on it. The best source of traffic will always be search engines as unlike social media it gives you very targeted traffic. Social Media is of course good for branding and what you want to do is to have Content Marketing + Social Media Marketing as traffic of source. For me, it is always these two which has given highest ROI, of course there is direct marketing too which often comes handy for certain cases.

Check out 25 Ways to do content Marketing (I don't think I can still post links at DP after being member for 5 years!) http://www.inboundio.com/blog/25-ways-to-do-content-marketing-ppt-infographic-list/

    Hey guys!

I personally think to send good traffic to your website, Fiverr and other microgig sites are a good option!

They have people on there who are selling 1,000+ targeted visitors for only $2-$5 (Depending on the microgig site).

In my past experiences, these visitors haven't been very active on the site, but they do help with increasing ranking!

    Thanks!

I don't think there is a 'best' source of traffic, but there are some ways that are better than others. My top sources are:
    • SEO - (Not only Google nowadays aswell!)
    • Social media (Great for targeted traffic)
    • Article/post marketing (Traffic gained through external articles, forum posts, blog comments etc)
These are what I usually try and focus on when building traffic to my websites, over time you do tend to find things that work better than others, and due to this you tend to adapt your sources to find the most effective ways.

There are so many answers of your question as per the experience of a person. Before all, you need to concentrate on quality and unique promotional content whether you write it for blog or social media or PR or article or anything. Try to observe what your competitors do.

to be totally honest you don't have to input that much, its dependant on what you're trying to market.
I made a payday loan broker website a few weeks back and used facebook ads to market my site
made a twitter, got around 20 legit followers and tweeted out retweet for a random £10 for two people into their paypals

swept the market, site traffic is now pretty big on a daily basis and the website is pulling leads

Best source of traffic is that source which redirects you to your website for some useful content. This will give you lower bounce rates and big chances of generating leads and getting relevant people on your site.

You can get traffic by promoting it online. Get a good PR and a number of quality back links for your blog. gradually you'll be getting a decent traffic for your Blog. or buy traffic from freelancers from SEOclerks at cheap rates.

Well its hard to say depends what type of site you are wanting to get traffic too, if its a squeeze page SEO isn't going to work I would say solo ads & PPV. For a website full of content such as a blog then I would focus on SEO & PPC.

Definitely agree. Targeting and analytics can really drive traffic traffic these days. You just really need to dig into the numbers and see what works.

The fastest way is to buy traffic. Such as facebook ads, solo ads.
Another way is to do a JV with someone who has traffic. Offer something in return for him/her to sent their list to your site.

Solo ads; build a list then get to a point where you can then do ad swaps/click banking (emailing each others lists for free)

If you use low comp keywords or long tail keywords then SEO shouldn't cost you anything apart from time. I learnt SEO myself and I rank most of my sites on the 1st page within 3-4 months of doing my own back linking etc. People seem to be stuck in some word where you have to pay to get on googles front page. Why pay someone a monthly fee to try and rank you in "fishing" when you could easily rank something like "how to go fishing in America" yourself?

What I usually do for a keyword with under 1000-8000 searchers a month and low comp is.

Make around 2-4 Web 2.0 accounts and submit articles linking back to the main site

Some of the ones I might use:
    wordpress.com,pr9
    livejournal.com,pr8
    my.opera.com,pr8
    tripod.com,pr8
    tumblr.com,pr8

    Comment on niche related blogs
    One page SEO above 80%
Work on backlinking inner pages and not the homepage (you barely see the homepage on the front page unless it's a hard keyword fill of brands)

I have no idea why people say SEO is dead.... it's far from it. ranking takes work and time... don't pay someone to do it they will just spam your homepage with crap... Might work for a few month but google will end up slapping you in the end.

You can try for forum posting and article submission. This is the best way for generating traffics.

There is really no such thing as free traffic. If you don't pay with your money you have to pay with your time and effort. Its as simple as that.
