Links from some quality/high PR directories are still preferred by Google.Just submit to high quality directories in the relevant category

when site owners don't bother to create unique content for each directory submission, it's possibly causing every other directory submission to be penalized by Google and other major search engines as potential spam and duplicate content.

Directory owners should be rewriting submitted descriptions. The best assumption is that the submitted description has been overused and to write your own. The paid directories are supposed to be "reviewing" sites anyway. That means they should be doing more than just pressing the accept button.

All my backlinks were marked in RED when we used tools to analyse our portal. My website was smashed by google due to excessive backlinks from free websites. my advice is to ignore directories and go for facebook and twitter

So why in the other thread that you just posted did you say: "Google do not acknowledge directories links as a :cool:spam" ... you are contradicting yourself.

In my opinion directories got a long way to go before they die.

Not one of my directories have been hit with a penalty by google and showing pages passing juice.

But with that said for some reason people think google is the only search engine out there and trying to please them not realizing they are hurting their rankings in other search engines while helping google line their own pockets.

And linking is not defined as spam
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spam_(electronic)

No where does it define linking as being spam unless the link is being posted over and over in the same content.
Or in googles guidelines for linking to line their own pockets.

As long as the directory is well edited i see no reason tho avoid them.

the best back links are built when you create unique content for your site, upload videos to YouTube channel with deep links pointing back to pages within your blog or website, in addition to submitting articles to article directories daily.

If you create some user engaging and entertaining contents for your readers then I believe article directory submission is not dead yet!

Submitting to directories still work but only to authority and high pr directories that have human editors. Those auto-approved directories are now de-indexed and can harm your site if you link to them.

DMOZ, Joeant.com Yahoo etc etc are still valid strategies. Likewise local business directories. I always notice improvements as part of a wider linking strategy.

Other than directory submission, you can post quality content in blogs, articles linking to relevant webpages with keywords.
