    Syndicating the content on your site to other people will work.
    Posting on forums in your niche will help

    Content based backlinks are the ones that work. Guest posting is a great way of getting content based backlinks, you can have a link in the content or in the author bio, depending on the guidelines mentioned by the blog owner. The article directories are also great platforms for getting content based links.

    There are several ways:
    eZines (good and easy way) - Dont post your content more than once.
    Directory Submission - Do check if they have good PR and rank
    Blog Commenting - But be natural, unnatural spam links can be penalized.
    Be Social - Being social will get your more back links

    Yes. You are absolutely right. Do guest blogging on quality blogs also help you to get natural backlinks. Be more attention while commenting on blog post for links. Recently Google's Matt Cutts says that comments on blogs that are relevant to the topics and links to your blogs. Use your name on links not the keywords you are targeting.

    Surprised that no one mention probably the easiest way to get a back link on a blog, "interlink" your relevant posting to each other. For example, whenever I write a new blog posting, I copy the blog posting URL and find a old posting that is relevant (same type of keyword or label) and I will put the new URL in that posting, with something like "For more updated information on "keyword", check out "new blog URL.

    Also I do the occasional, "Top Ten" (most visited posting, best pics, top video, etc) posting where I put my previous 10 blog postings in a list with a little unique content.

    I like to control my own back links.

    Be a writer and write Guest posts.
    Submit your blog in top blogging communities like Networkedblog, Indiblogger.in and Paperblog.

    Note - Before commenting and guest posting must check the reputation of that blog. (DA, PR and Alexa)

    You must not use a single way to backlink on your blog because the the greater is the diversity of links, the better it is. This means, if you use a variety of sources to backlink to your blog, the better it is in Google eyes. I think the best way is a combination of commenting (without spamming), guesting posting, yahoo answering, forum commenting and social bookmarking. These are all free methods and will not cost you money. Just you need to keep in mind that the purpose of commenting is not just for leaving a backlink but truly engaging with others.
