Is Directory Submission Still Effective After Google's Recent Updates?

First I would like to thank you all for your replies. After analyze your replies, I got a point that Directory submission is still effective and good for creating back links but all should be top rated directories with proper category.

 

Could anyone give me a list of top rated directory sites?

Ya, am agree with you but most of the webmasters are unable to pay.

 

Actually, most webmasters can afford to pay for submission. The mom and pop business is the backbone of any quality directory. Any new business must have a marketing budget or it's surely doomed to failure.

After hearing the hype about web directories being dead, I purposely didn't link to a new site that I had developed from anywhere, except that I submitted it to a regional city category of one web directory, one whose main page was a PR-5. The city category was seven levels deep and the page that it appeared on had no page rank at all.

In less than a week, the site was in Google's SERPs, and within two weeks it was on the first page of its SERPS on a search of the city and state. It took about three weeks for Bing to find it but it did find its way the first page of Bing's SERPs.

In all fairness, this was a 200+ page site on a town of fewer than a hundred people, so there wasn't a whole lot of competition for keywords but still, without my having submitted it anywhere else or referred to it on any of my other sites, one low-level listing on a web directory brought it to #2, behind the Wikipedia page but ahead of the official town site, in Google, and #4 in Bing within a few weeks.

The site still doesn't have page rank but it's doing well on any searches that anyone likely to be interested in that particular town is likely to use.

My opinion is that what Google has done, and is likely to do in the future, is simply to hold web directories to the same standards that it holds every other web site to, and that web directories are going to have to provide some content besides paid site listings if the are going to continue to to well, but those that do are unlikely to suffer irreparable harm.

 

Directory submission still has value.

Most of the directories that lost PageRank with the last update were junk, although there were some surprises. The majority of the ones that I have been following stayed the same, I think, while others went up. I believe that people err when they think of web directories as anything more or less than any other type of website on the Internet. Those with authority, or with good, useful and unique content, are good places to have a link. The advantage in a web directory is that there is generally a direct method whereby you can request a link, unlike other websites.

 

I am a directory owner and I'm getting like 200+ link submissions in a day. If people are paying for it, it can't be over...

 

200 paid or 200 "submissions"... How many of them are you actually listing? In other words what percentage of them are quality web sites? Also, what is the name of the directory? Feel free to PM that so you don't appear spammy in this thread.. Thanks.

 

No...Through Directories you can get backlink as well as you can increase your business visibility....

 

All you need to be really meticulous while selecting and submitting into a directory. Go for the high quality directories to build back links as getting listed in 5 High Quality free/paid directories may give more value than getting listed in thousand of low quality directories.

 

I'm still waiting on some type of response from Japsworld as well.
