vBulletin 4 or 5 - which to choose

Discussion in 'vBulletin' started by Ksandr, Jan 22, 2014.

Few years ago I was running vBulletin 3.x forum and I am quite familiar with everything in it.
Now I want to start a brand new forum and I am thinking what to choose - I have vB3 license but it's seems kinda old nowadays.

Now you can get vB 5 with vB 4 but there is still little problem - I have no idea which one to use. I am running an Wordpress site with news and information and want to make forum for it. I am also thinking about some integration between WP and vB like user registrations, etc.

Now I am really confused what to use:
    1. vBulletin forum 4.x
    2. vBulletin suite 4
    3. vBulletin 5 connect
vB 4 have lots of addons (I want to run some kind of +/- posts addon what will grant user ability to rank posts and if they reach like -5 points they are hidden, etc.), and I heard that vB 5 is buggy and incomplete. Do I need to install suite or will forum be enough? Should I go with vB 5 anyway, I've seen some bad comments about it from around 3-6 months ago is it better now? I like how you can simply add widgets and modules to forum in vB 5.

If you must use vBulletin for whatever reason, vBulletin 4 is the best version.

Well this is the system I know best and it has a lot of addons. I was searching for good and up to date comparison between vB, IPB, XF, etc. but failed to find one :(
    What are your suggestions?

Go for XenForo or IPB. Even if you go for vBulletin 4, that version has no future since all their resources are going into the crappy vBulletin 5.

Well considering we are using XenForo here, I guess that answers your question...

    1. Don't understand your first question. You want to put banners on the forum and you are asking if there is enough space? If so, yes.
    2. You are not forced to play extra money for a skin/theme but if you want something good there are themes available in their resource shop.

Actually it`s very easy: No vbulletin at all.
vb5 is crap. vb4 is left behind and ignored by the developers.

If you want just a message board: XenForo. If you need more then a pure message board: IPB.

    Regards, Nik

I really wonder how you can recommend vbulletin4. IB never finished the promised features, updates come out like yearly... and the developers even state they use all devs on vb5.
This won`t be better with their strange vbulletin cloud...

I totally agree. My customer always asked us to install vBulletin each time he open a new community. :)
