"Lack of SEO knowledge"? Huh? I've been a longtime reader and video follower of Rand. He has forgotten more about SEO than most people here know!

In the real SEO world where people get rankings Rand's nothing more than a joke. He gets marketing but he hasn't done SEO for years and even when he was he didn't have a good grasp on how it worked.
You'll come to learn that most "gurus" in the industry haven't done a whole lot or it's been years since they have.

Rand is out of business so his tweets don't play significant role anymore.

It seems like the really extreme white hat guys refuse to believe anything that black hat guys do is worthwhile and the black hat guys think the same of the white hats.

Maybe if more people had an open mind they'd realize that if you look at different link building/SEO tactics on their merits and don't try and assign some randomly defined "hat" to them you'd have more options and probably more success.

Sure but the real problem is that those whitehat gurus don't have a clue. Over the years I've met with countless gurus from popular conventions, SEO meetups and what have you. All these guys do is bank on some title tag changes, and a little onsite optimization. That's it.
Because they land big clients with major pagerank and authority already the changes work and somehow the clients are pleased. No real "seo" was done and nothing more than some amateur Jr. SEO could have done for $10/hr.
Mr fishkin is no exception. I've been less than impressed with his SEO knowledge the few times we've had a chance to talk.
