I have received a lot of spam comments on my blog. How can I remove them? Can I use akismet?

You should be using it already and yes, you can delete them all in one go. It will also go check for them and likely flag most of them already.

Turning that on is literally one of the first things I do.

Yes you can or you can go through them manual.

I would recommend setting up manual approve comments in the settings, it saves the hassle then as you can verify them all before they go live :)

Yes, you can delete them all at once, go to the comments section, click on Spam and will list all spam comments that are already marked as spam and then click on empty spam. or you can click on each check box beside each comment and then from bulk action select delete permanently and then click apply.

You should go to the "Screen Options" dropdown at the top right portion of the dashboard when in the comments and raise the "show on screen" number, too large a number will be rejected by WordPress, try for 300 and you will get it done a lot faster than with the default 20 displayed. You can raise or lower the lower the number displayed (by 50 or so) if WordPress doesn't like your choice or you want to try to delete more each time.
The checkbox next to "Author" will select all. you can then move all selected to trash or mark them as spam.
Also select "Pending" so all you see are the unmoderated comments.

You can choose to disallow comments completely or I use another plugin to help akismet

I think you can delete them manually, too. Can't you? But I probably should install Akismet.

You can use akismet. Just install it on your site and don't forget to turn it on using your API key.

It's better if he has a plugin that will filter them automatically like as mentioned already, Akismet plugin

You could try the plugin, WP Optimize. It has this feature.

Yeah I use phpmyadmin for a lot of things like that too. You can always "show all" and remove everything.
    Much quicker for some things.
