How does the "death" of guest blogging affect you?

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by YJunK, Jan 28, 2014.

As an avid blogger, the official remark of google about "guest blogging" dying scared me a little bit. Guest blogging has always been a big deal for me, because I like building a community (however small) around my writing.
However having payed more attention to it, I found that what is being referred to is just the tactic of guest blogging for the sake of creating back links.
How does this change affect you?

If you are building yourself and your website as an authority in your niche by some guest blogging, I would probably continue to do so if you can see it helps make your website/person/brand known. Buildnig relationships with webmasters in your niche is very valuable for a direct traffic point of view as well.

It doesn't. I'll still focus on doing what I'm doing because it works.
Think about the implications of guest blogging dying. Google doesn't have the power to do much about it and they know that. They can just hope they can scare people into following the "rules".

Google is not the only way to get traffic. ;)

Well placed backlinks can still get you traffic and guest posting can be a way to build an online reputation.

Guest blogging and downhill skiing are about the same for me — if I do either one six more times, that'll make an even half dozen in my lifetime.

Guest blogging is dead? No, guest blogging just for SEO purposes (links) is dead. Thankfully*. That was never the point in it in the first place. It is for gaining access to a new audience and referral traffic.

*Idiotic "SEO experts" and "webmasters" killed it off from having any value in terms of links by turning it into Article Marketing Spam 2.0.

I think it may be dead for SEO but great for B2B.

    Hi,

Guest blogging is not looking to be dead, to be honest. It is that its frequency would be capped.

    Thanks,

Guest blogging is not dead at all, but how webmasters just made use of it for backlinks is dead.Doing it the right way is still possible and at least I seem to be doing it right.

Kinda painful but its the truth. You really can't rely much on old techniques. Techniques that Google considers obsolete. And sadly guest blogging is one of them. Darn you Google and your updates!

Has anybody found a way around the problem? Now that the linking-game is off via guest blogging, have you started doing something differently to make up for the lost opportunity?

Guest blogging is a great way way to put yourself out there for purposes of making yourself known more so than for linkage. However, when you make sure your content is high-quality, it also benefits you as far as gaining backlinks. Search enginges strongle discourage doing it just to get links, though.
