I'm confused - this is a webpage you are constructing?
Or a document you need to read?

I'm technically inept and I freely admit this. One of the reasons I came to DP is to try and learn. So...is "black things" a new technical term? Should I start using it so that I can sound all techie?

Simply look for the same symbol ¶ under MS Word toolbar and click.

Those black blocks appear mostly due to some problem or incompatibility with paragraph formatting. It's all explained here: http://www.hightechdad.com/2013/03/...raph-formatting-page-break-in-microsoft-word/. Just follow what is given and check if the blocks disappear. I have the same problem with older versions of MS WORD files on my PC.
Before editing your documents, I would suggest that you save backup copies in another folder - so you don't have to worry if anything goes wrong.
    Hope this helps.:)
