Building a website and not a blog using wordpress.

I am fairly comfortable with wordpress blogging. I want to build a website using wordpress (not a blog) offering my educational services. I glanced at several tutorials but was disappointed with the quality. Do you offer any suggestions for a best tutorial to build a website (not a blog) using wordpress?

Would just by opting for a static home page at the settings solve the issue?

I don't want sidebars. Are there ready made themes to develop websites using wordpress?
    Thanks for your time.

    hello there,

The wordpress is a CMS, sure it's for blogging but can also be used as a full powerful website, ecommerce website and social network... for your tutorials website there is a lot of solution like you said a static pages.. there is a lot of themes without sidebar that you can use. in fact you just need to make a Structure that you need for your website then add the things you will need... that's all

I thank both of you for your input. Yeah, I am aware of theme forest but I found it tough to get what I was looking for. May be I require more patience to browse through the themes.

I like the look of the themes by themetrust.com. I haven't used any of those so far and can't really tell anything about their functionality but they do look professional

There are lot of themes which can come in handy for creating a more powerful website. Wordpress is mostly used for blogging but now people are migrating their sites to WP as its easy and doesn't require much of coding and stuffs.

You can look at some amazing themes... Go around Themeforest.net or MyThemeshop.com.

    Cheers

There are a lot of themes that come with easy and simple options to build a good website.

Options where you can hide the Widgets Area to have a Full-Width Page and stuff like that.

They have share some awesome themes you can use here already....

It all will come down to how you customize everything and how you organize everything on your site. The main thing you are probably going to work on the most is putting everything together and organizing everything on the site. The Menus, Categories and the Structure of your information.

I am also building a website (the one in my signature) that offers a lot of education on one subject and I'm currently working on organizing everything in a simple way for people to find the information they need - but my website is a Blog and looks like a blog of course. I know what you are trying to do - the only difference is the Sidebars. At the beginning I also wanted to just build "static" sites with valuable information but I got to love the Blog Structure. It is a personal choice, though.

Without the sidebars it would look a little less than a Blog Site.

    Anyways... much success!

    ;)

WordPress is amazing for Website building, you can practically make any kind of site you wish and the best part is you can normally always find a plugin that'll do what you need your site to do. So there's no extra long coding needed to add new features.

I'm on a current project which involves creating a custom built website with over 2.5k pages, and it's nothing to do with a blog.
It would of cost $1000+ to get one coded from scratch to fit my needs, but after editing the theme completely, re designing the home page, post pages and adding all the features I needed from plugins it's worked out perfect. No one would guess its wordpress powered apart from the "Powered by Wordpress" bit at the bottom lol.

If you don't need the blog functionality, just create pages.
I always use one of the WordPress.org hosted and developed themes (Twenty Ten, Twenty Eleven, Twenty Twelve or Twenty Thirteen) and create a child theme based on one of them. That is in my opinion the best basis for developing a website for any niche.

Installation of a custom header image is simple and will set your site apart from the crowd.

Use custom page template any of your "squeeze" or "sales" pages.
