There may well be little activity in the category you are looking at, but, DMOZ has hundreds and hundreds of thousands of categories. You can be assured plenty is happening and as it always has done, DMOZ is growing bigger and better each day.

The only place is still hear about DOMZ is hear at DP.

DOMZ was a big deal years and years ago now it is a basically dead directory that has a few editors that sell links from time to time. I would imagine that these editors are the ones that are still trying to keep it alive.

Don't waste your time if you want a directory link just go pay $10 somewhere. Much easier and the basically same thing.

What are you basing that on? Data I looked at recently showed it is still easily the fastest growing directory on the web. How are you determining that its dead?

What "data" are you looking at ? domz is growing faster then yellow pages and yelp ? lol

domoz has a few volunteer editors that pick a few sites on free time(or when someone slips a payment their way). it is full of dead links and outdated sites. Have they even cleaned out the geocities links yet?

I did not know that Yelp was a website directory!
This data on total number of sites listed:
    1 Jan 2012 4,976,587
    1 Jan 2013 5,114,083
    4 May 2013 5,193,706
    31 July 2013 5,223,457
    27 Aug 2013 5,247,409
    26 Sept 2013 5,260,277
    30 Oct 2013 5,262,071
    6 Dec 2013 5,292,731

What other web directory comes close to that growth?

RAFL. I loathe people talking crap and then pretending it is a fact. First you claim its dead, then you claim that the only people there are "a few Editors selling links"....... so i guess you have an explanation of how it gained 10-20K sites last month?

At least we agree on one thing.....you have an imagination :)

Fastest growing? I was visiting this directory some weeks ago and most links on there are dead, are parked domains or the original sites changed ownership and today aren't what the description says.

Besides the overall looking of the site looks pretty outdated, and the submission link doesn't work either.

So how do you explain the 10,000 to 20,000 new links that are added each month? What other directory is growing that fast?
Did you report them or would you rather just come to DP and whinge about it? Why not be part of the solution rather than whine?

No doubt we have some dead links.....5 MILLION+ listings and not enough editors......sadly most people like to whinge about DMOZ rather than helping build it. The editors can only do so much, its a hobby not a job.

The suggestion links do work??? I dont know why you think they dont, eg.

    http://www.dmoz.org/Health/Conditions_and_Diseases/Cancer/Organizations/Oceania/Australia/

Suggestion Link is working perfectly and gheez.....where are all these dead sites you are talking about?

As noted above, there were no working links in that place. I was browsing all over and either the submission link nor the contact link were working but returning CGI errors. How reporting those irregularities then?

Come on..., the whole concept of directories is way outdated. When you look for something do you go to a directory or use a search engine? The only thing that keeps them alive is SEO and backlinks, but that does not mean they provide any real user value.

Your average guy with a free version of a directory script and a scraped database. or Your average guy with a free version of a directory script turned n auto with a post on DP for free directory links.

I would like to know where you get these numbers from ? are they even real ?
If they are what happened did domoz "hire" a speed freak or a board family from Nigeria ?

Why would I even care.. enough to report or even look at domoz. If I wanted a 90s revival I might go look at some of the 600-800px wide sites in the database, but nahh. maybe next year.

It's just another directory that provide backlink, except DMOZ is one of two best out of any directories (other one is Yahoo! Directory - Expensive). Only importance in having a link on DMOZ is that it can increase the value of your website because when you do websites checking through some tools often you will see DMOZ says no or yes and often the ones that says it is on DMOZ it increased a bit value but you can increase the value with backlink building, just think of DMOZ as a bonus.

Is Dmoz something that you must to have? Absolutely not, DMOZ hardly accept any URL suggestion which is what has been making DMOZ more less important in my opinion but also understandable as DMOZ editors are volunteers although DMOZ rules is pretty strict.

Be sure to suggest url in the best category as possible you can and when you submit a URL then move on and forget about DMOZ because the chance you will never get it and if you try again you either can be banned from having a chance to have your website submitted or moving your website to the bottom of their to-do all over again. If you ever get accepted, then you are absolutely lucky and I congratulate you.
