Yes, @indiasbull, all of these ideas work now as well. Many companies are busy setting goals and strategies for the coming year so I think that's probably why they are posted as suggestions for 2014.

Only do directory which is related to the niche
In the recent update from google, all those sites were hit which were linked into members signature or profile
Blog comments -> Only refer to those blogs which has 1 pr or higher and on relevant blogs.
Do more of guest blogging and try to link your site to those blogs.
