I just can't get past the fact that you have to pay anywhere from $5-$60 for some mods for Xenforo. Maybe I'm just cheap, I dunno.

I'm a little late to the party here but what about MyBB? I have it running on a few sites and I like it. I started way back with Ultimate Bulletin Board (actually, before that even with a 300 baud modem, Commodore 64 and C-Net BBS) and have quite a bit of experience using different platforms - and MyBB is very good.

No-one's mentioned SMF - is that just so shit?? lol

It's the only one I have experience with, but I have nothing to compare it with...

I use VB4 for my forum and my team made a conscious decision of staying away from VB5. Now we're discussing what software platform we should look at to get away from VB.

I heard it told that XenForo uses less system resources than either IPB or VB. Can anyone substantiate this?

Also if anyone has taken their VB system to Xen (maybe DP can help me out here), does content like user notes get lost?

Does anyone know if Xen has a working point system? I found one through Google but can't view it because I'm not a licensed customer.

This thread has been a great help in narrowing down top candidates.

XF uses far less resources than vB or IPB. User Notes are not imported by default since XF has no user note system in it's standard system (we imported ours but we had to create a user note system in XF for them to be imported into).

No clue what a "points system" is, so can't help there.

    vB5 is unusable...

it doesn't even have all the features vb4 has.

seeing how smooth DP is working, I'd recommend you to go for Xenforo!

http://www.vanillaforums.org Has points system plugin. Its a very nice new forum which is free. I have IPB and despite their demands for a regular subscription to keep up the license they lack in support as well as any 3rd party integration like Wordpress. With vanilla its pretty straightforward, WP integration is included. I wish I had found it before dumping hundreds of dollars on paid forum software.

I also bought VBulletin5 based on a tip from someone else - seems that was not a good idea. The support could be better - I have a problem now with it that nobody can or will solve and the blog does not help either. I think many others are in the same boat. So, I might try XenForo although I will likely hire someone to do everything for me - makes life easier.

What dos the Warrior Forum use ? I heard they use Vbulletin ?

    Thank you.

Well, I would say the name, but I don't want to hurt anyone. He is very experienced or I thought so. It was part of a final course he offered for $300 only offered to 25 people, me being one of them. But the course was good, just not sure why he said VBulletin was the best and that he was successful with it for over a year now.

Also, just noticed that Vanillaforums.org is free, but vanillaforums.com is not free.

Its all opinion, the options are too vast. Recommending a specific forum software doesn't make one an expert.

Yep... doesn't necessarily make you an expert, but anyone recommending vBulletin 5 definitely makes them a non-expert.

    Hi Shawn,

I was using vBulletin and recently changed to XenForo because of your suggestion and I'm glad I did. Big difference ! Thank you for the tip. I may also buy some advertising here at digital point - just need to decide on banner ads or contextual.

I just transferred my forum from vB to XF yesterday. It was a tough decision because I need to spend $140USD from my own pocket money. And know what? I'm not regret with the decision I've made and my forumers are very happy with the new environment. They really love it!

A vote for Moot.it forums from here. Looks quite fantastic and it's super fast. They're still in beta but seems pretty popular already.
