I think it's completely normal if you have a buy word in your domain.
I have some of such domains and they are good in ranking after all updates.
Remember one thing - Google and other SE's don't care about your domain, even about the extension, but they care about your content quality! So focus on it, not on domain name.

I think it's fine, don't worry too much about that. Google probably understands that there are businesses with buy in the name.

more often than not I try to stay away from having buy in the domain name simply
because it may prevent some people from clicking on your site. have no scientific
study to back me up just my opinion on human nature.

I think it is fine especially if you have problems getting the domain name you want.
People put the word buy, sell, best etc in front of domain names at times.

Might only be a problem if you overuse the phrase for your anchor text, if you are looking to get traffic from organic search that is.

Just don't overuse it, create an easy to remember domain name and add great contents.

No problem. Build your website with fast loaded theme and high quality content. Everything will be okay :)

No, do not use "buy" in the domain. In the past this would work great for LP's that would be used for PPC, but not for SEO. It's definitely spammy and highly unlikely that you'd get ranked for any good terms.

The best way to establish any domain is to attempt to create a brand from it and utilize high quality content that people find USEFUL. If your site uses "buy" in the domain, it's most likely going to be a sales pitch and not useful. Think logically if you'd want that website/domain to appear on your search engine. Of course you wouldn't.

If it's for a short term project or to dump on someone at flippa, go for it

If it's for long term branding, focus on other consumer benefits (as @clenard notes), and the "buy" is assumed.

    Not anymore you cant !
I did it for years and was killing it ! Had one site making $11,000 a month alone until Google panda
now the only sites that rank for buyer keywords are Amazon,Wal-Mart etc...

Bad move do not do it ...
