How are you building your site? If you're on Wordpress, there are many slider plugins you can try out.

I suggest you bxslider , it is smaller than nivo and easy to use.
I am using it on my home page www.myskins.org and its awesome with fast loader times.
It is responsive and touch sensitive too :)
    Hope this helps :)
    regards

My question would be why do you want to piss all over you're sites accessibility and force yourself into a crappy fixed width layout or worse, ugly-assed image resizing with some stupid malfing bandwidth and space wasting "gee ain't it neat" crap that has NO MALFING BUSINESS on a website in the first damned place, and on the whole just gets in the way of what users are actually visiting your site for -- THE CONTENT!

    Just saying...

While your comments are accurate, the op did say he was looking for a "simple" slider which can be done without too much of bandwidth drain & made responsive. Just depends on the content and how make it.

There is still a demand and I think they can be useful on some sites to grab the visitors attention and get them to explore the rest of your site. Again, depends how its done but look at how many top companies use them on there sites so it can't be all bad. I get clients sometimes want a huge slider with 30+ slides and usually talk them into reducing them to 3-5 of the most important slides to keep it reasonable.

I don't see why any would watch all the stupid reality TV shows that all have the same basic plot and fake scripted drama? But there is a huge demand(apparently a large majority of the public are not too bright) for it so people make money providing it.
