    first you should go W3C HTML Tutorial, for beginner it best then you can start to follow other tutorials and books.

    You should check www.lynda.com video tutorials for web designing. But its not at all free. ;) Search Lynda.com for web designing tutorials and download the videos from Torrentz. I have studied my web designing lessons at first from those videos :) Its worth downloading those video tutorials.

    Basically Web Designing and Web Development both are different professions. i didn't know what you mean of web designing. Is it developing and designing both.

    If you are talking about web development then I will suggest you www.w3schools.com. This is best to learn coding like html, Css, java, java script, PHP and few other languages.

    As a wordpress freelancer, at first, i didn't know anything about web design, but after learn step by step from w3school, also from real practice, i got something for myself :).
    And i think that ebook isn't good (at least for myself), in ebook, they wrote things very simple and sample, and it doesn't make you encourage to find things related to that points.
    You should take course from udemy.com, it's really good :)

    I just look the udemy.com. Its looking fine but they are looking new in the market. I suggest Lynda.com. They are charging $25/month. They have lot of tutorial to learn.
