We will need to understand a very important concept here.
There's a BIG difference between "keywords" and "markets".

To find markets you need to know what people search for and buy. This is what we call “customer groups”. This is the first step and keywords come after that.

A lot of people get it backwards and pick keywords first...and wind up at #1 but can't make any money.

    This is a done-that-been-there case.

What most keyword research tools are doing these days is giving you a huge keyword list which is almost as good as GKT...It contains all sorts irrelevant keywords that will probably do me no good in my niche.

I was introduced to “Keyword Country” by a friend and I must say this is one tool that beats everyone else. It gives you a list of expandable keyword groups. Those can be micro niches for you to plan PPC and content campaigns around. The results have been just terrific, a sample given below (for the EXACT set of keywords. My niche: dog training)

List of a few Groups returned by Google Adwords Keyword Tool
    - Training Classes
    - Clicker
    - Leash Dog
    - Aggressive
    - Training Online
    - Therapy
    - Agility Dog
    - Keywords like Dog Training Charlotte nc

List of a few Groups returned by Keyword Country
    - Dog Behavior training
    - Dog Training School
    - Dog training tips
    - Potty training dog
    - Dog training books
    - Dog Training Supplies

Isn't this difference in Keywords like...tooooo BIG?

All you Google keywords tool lovers out there – most of the people posting here – take note; this tool is useless by itself for keyword research. This is because it misses out most of the keyword phrases that people are searching on.

As proof of this, for example, take the keyword "buy".

Google keywords planner gives you 600 or so search phrases including the word by. Well, that is obviously complete bullshit - there are loads more search phrases including that word in any given month. Google is fibbing!

The truth is, Google highly edits the results gives you because it doesn't want to help spammers.

Using "buy as an example, Google only actually gives you around 5% of the search phrases including any given term. That is why it is sh*t in that respect: and if you don't take account of this in your keyword research you are being a right newbie!

For example, consider Super Suggester for the same search – buy. This gives around 7000 keywords including that word over the month. So that's a bit more like it!

    http://www.supersuggester.com

So, those of you saying how wonderful Google Planner is, you need to think twice before you go around misleading people by posting things like this on open forums. GKWT (Panner) is OK - but don't post BS!

Google Planner has its place but you need to know it's many limitations.

My post on how I do keyword research is here:
    http://heymalc.com/the-best-how-to-keyword-research-tool-and-its-free

If you combine this method I describe with the wonderful Super Suggester you have a winner. Google KW Planner by itself - you are just joining the crowd. You need to rise above them.
    Any questions? Do ask :)

I totally agree with Malc. What I would like to add though is ...

    Related Keywords.

This is where 100% keyword tools totally fail.

Let's take Malc's example keyword kitten toys shall we?

Even with 7000 keywords found with the word kitten toys in them you're still missing out big time.

Playful kitty, skein or stormtrooper mice are all related keywords but GKT (KP) and others won't ever show it to you!

That's why relying solely on keyword research tools (I mean all of them) is a pure madness!

Marc made a great point above, you shouldn't be putting all your eggs in one basket when it comes to keyword research. Especially if that basket is googles keyword tool. While it is extremely useful for gauging monthly search activity, which is what I use it for mostly, it needs human input to give you what your looking for. Meaning if you type in one word/phrase it won't give you many relevant related terms.

So the best option is to use one of the tools already mentioned. Then take the words you find to Adwords to gauge traffic. Another one of my favorite tools for researching your key words is traffic Travis. It' a great tool and it's FREE!

I am the only one who wonders why all the screaming self-styled SEO experts have a blog with nearly zero traffic and zero value? You could outrank some of the domains in the signatures of some people here easily with a personal blog. Really. People be careful who you believe here.
