Normally, a page would have one main heading (the H1 tag), plus it may have subheadings of different order (H2 - H3 subheadings).
For example, it could look like this:

    Breaking News (H1)

Today in Chicago, a gang of 3 robbed a bank (H2)

    Who were those guys (H3)
    lorem ipsum lorem ipsum

How much money they took (H3)
    lorem ipsum lorem ipsum

What the police has done so far (H3)
    lorem ipsum lorem ipsum

Plus, you can grab a on page optimization tool and see how your competitors are using H1-H5 tags on their pages, perhaps this will provide some insight.

Kianu42 explained it nicely. As per SEO rules there should be One H1 per page. The sub-headers like H2 or H3 may repeat depends upon the contents (sections) of your site.

More than one H1 is illogical, so that should be a good guide to how many to use.
And the best number of H2s is the number that are needed in the content .

Hi, You can use H1 in Main title of your page or Content then you can use H2 or H3 in Subheadings. if you have also subtopic in Subheading then you should give H2 to subheading and H3 to sub topics.

You only need to use them sparingly. The less you use them the better. If you overdo it you will be punished by Google for spam.
