What are the things that make you choose a host? Does it matter to you how big or small the host is?

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

Customer Service should be awesome. This is my first priority. I need 99.9% up time because I may lose clients if my site is down. Should have control panel. These are a few points I look when hosting my site.

Reputation, reliability and quality. I generally choose unmanaged server providers so support doesn't matter much. I worry more about quality of their bandwidth and price of hardware. If my servers crash, I prefer for it to be my fault and responsibility to fix. :D

There are a few things that makes me choose someone. The main factors are:
    - are they a legitimate company
    - how long have they been in business
    - expected response times to tickets and server management.
    - cost of additional addons (ip blocks / software / etc)
    - expected response times in case of hardware failure.

I dont need 24/7 support, neither do I need 20min response times guaranteed. But I always pay for full management, so in the unlikely event that I ever need something, then I do need it resolved quickly.

I have to say, I do like smaller companies, and have had alot of good experiences to date.

One thing to note is this. IF you are looking for a reseller account, be SURE to ask them for the hostname for the server that you will be on. The reason is that some companies might use a hostname that is, or is similar to, or points to their home page. Clients of a reseller can then easily find out the hostname, find out that your a using a reseller account, and unless you a providing a better service, then they will possibly leave you to go direct to where you have your reseller account from.

I vote for turn around time and people's effort in communicating , trying to do something different for you and solve your problem/concern.

Maybe for a buck or two higher but you will be glad people treat your data at utmost important.

but with hyper competition going around in hosting industry, you don't get that anymore, but if you do get 1 . appreciate what they can do for you !!

    99.99 uptime
    DDOS protection
Old Company (it did not depend on OLD only. If the support have good knowledge, new is also good).

Actually, it doesn't make sense whether this is a small hosting provider or a hosting giant.Sometimes small companies have more powerful hardware than the monsters of the hosting industry.

That is why in order to test the quality of the hosting provider, you just need one month of testing their services.
