It all depends where you guest post. If you guest post on a ton of crappy blogs with no unique content, it will hurt your site. The opposite is true as well. If you guest post on blogs with unique content and high PR that may do some good to your site. The problem is 90% of high PR blogs do not allow guest posting. Secondly, even guest posting on high PR blogs can be considered as spam and get your site penalized. Check out this video. Have to agree with the fact that high PR blogs dont allow guest posts and therefore we need to maximize on the opportunities by low PR blogs. Having said that, the post has to look natural. Everybody know how important SEO friendly content is but wont make any sense until the reader is amused. There is no substitute for quality content.
I think guest blogging is great in a way as it allows content to be distributed across new platforms, so as a blogger if you are writing good quality content it is a great way of sharing your content with another blogs audience. If you are guest blogging just for a link then its not always going to work out that well for you as that means you are possibly writing a low quality blogpost as all you care about is the link also the blog is accepting a free post so they are possibly going to be a poor quality blog anyway. I think its great for small unknown bloggers to get there content out there by posting on a blog with a higher readership and then get a link in exchange for the free post.
Yes, guest blogging is good for getting relevant and natural links, high quality links as well... but you have to make effort to find what blog allows guest post, your writing skills should also be good so that your blog post would easily be accepted.

Yes guest posting is still in working but there are few guidelines in link anchoring. If you posting your blog continuously with rich anchor text then you will really get hurt. So don't do it aggressively and try to create link on long tall keywords and quality content is king don't forget it!
