How does this give the men back their "honour"?

There is so much wrong that is happening in that story.

First, a woman is forced to pay for her brothers actions. A town council of some kind condemns her to marry to pay for her brother's actions. The new "husband" marries her as a payback and lets his brothers rape her. What a bunch of sick and twisted fucks. They all deserve a shot in the head.

But, I agree with you Sarah. How in the world does anyone in that place think any of it makes a lick of sense? There is no rationale for behavior like this. Period.

 

Doesn't the whole concept about allowing others to arrange your marriage for you open up the doors to this type of insanity?

If you have a good and caring family, you may be lucky and meet someone you're happy with.

But if not, you can be royally screwed ... for life!

 

Five years from now, that guy and his brothers will be working at Microsoft, telling everyone else why their code sucks.

 

5 years from now the brothers will give relationship advice online.

 

Being from India, I can provide you an insight. This particular case involved a bunch of Muslim families and their Islamic Counsel. Although even Hindus in those areas are no better. They are savage people; still living under dark age mindset. The same mindset that compels them to do honor killings. All part of a chauvinistic society with a false pretense of honor.

 

"The Webmaster" has it quite right -- It's not really any different than Old Testament jewish/christian practices, the only difference being it's been anywhere between 100 and 1500 years since most of it was practiced. If you actually did half the stuff it says to do in the Bible in a first world nation, you'd land in prison.

"dark age mindset" is a spot on accessment. They use their religion as an EXCUSE to behave like a bunch of primitive, inhumane honorless jackasses, then have the cojónes to call it honor. Not exactly anything new, it's just more of the same BS that's been going on with ANYONE raised under ritualistic indoctrination... be it extremist fringe jackasses like radical Islamics or the nutters at Westboro Baptist, to just plain normal 'people of faith' who are blind to just how badly they are being herded like sheep into an irrational hatred of anyone who doesn't conform to their expectations.

There's actually a hopeful and uplifting part to this story -- the surprising part is that this woman, raised in the tradition came forward about it! Being she's part of that society, coming out about it and going to the REAL authorities means in my mind, she's got a bigger pair of brass monkey balls than any of the gutless wonders and religious extremist whackjobs who put her in that situation. To me she's no different than Rosa Parks, Alice Paul, Sojourner Truth, Nelson Mandela, Elie Wiesel, etc, etc...

Thankfully we have this tool for open discussion of such things called the Internet. It's shrinking the world and exposing people who have never even heard of "Civil Rights" to the concept -- which is why SO many politicians worldwide, even in first world nations are DEATHLY afraid of it, or want to control it Goebbels style. As always, controlling the dissemination of information is the first step to controlling the minds of the sheep... and it's up to us sheepdogs to pick up the banner, say "BULLSHIT", and fight the good fight against the wolves.

Because if you don't believe the wolves are out there, you've already lost.
