    Hello webmasters,

I found something new on Google and decided to share with you all.
While searching a keywords "google" on google.com i found sub-domains are on the top position like Google maps, Google earth and Google analytics. What does that mean these websites are more preferable than Google.com or something else?

I would think that more people type in or search for the sub-domains because they probably use the Google search bar for searches, or their homepage automatically points to Google.com.

The #1 SERP when I just searched "Google" was, as expected, www.google.com

Every website, even google is subject to google's search algorithm. This complex program makes its own decisions about what should appear first in results. The same is true of google's page rank algorithm. The highest attainable PR is 10, and a few sites achieve this. But google itself is a PR 9. Crazy, huh?

    haha, op, you're funny

who in their sane mind would search for google.com while actually being on google.com??
however, i once did wonder where my phone was while actually holding it in my hand.

anyhow, i don't normally check google rankings, ..
but when I do, it's normally the goodle rankings of my own site ;)

My view is you need to do an unpersonalised search (&pws=0). An unpersonalised search for "google" in the USA and UK shows them as #1. Even then, you might have regional variations (e.g. google.com is #1 in USA and UK, but google.co.in was #3 for me in India - all with personalisation disabled and gl=xx to specify the country code).

Spend some more time about learning how to search and about search results.

That result might be because you have signed in to your Google account and are searching the term "Google". Also might be because you are a big user of Google maps, earth that Google might be showing that to you, that result is definitely personalized. Google.com is what happens to be the first result when "Google" is searched. It might be also because Google might be doing different search result tests and you have been given one such instance of the result.

actualy you are searching google on itself means on google.com thats why if you type google you are not looking for google.com and thats why it shows subdomains

Google is looking to deliver relevance- showing Google.com as #1 for the term "Google" when being searched from Google.com is pointless- the end user has already reached the destination in order to make the search. The end user is far more likely to be searching for something specific within Google and as a result may at times dependant on user display subdomains higher within search than the root domain in order to provide the most relevant and useful content to the end user.
