    Exactly.

If Google was so crap everyone would leave and use other search engines. It's not like people don't know about Bing and Yahoo!, they just choose to use Google. (Let's face it, Internet Explorer is the default browser, Bing is the default search engine, Google still has the most searchers.)

Also, how DuckDuckGo gets its results. Webmasters complain about Google and Wikipedia, so it surprises me!

Those "bangs" are useless if you have firefox. You can literally add any site search to the top corner of your browser and choose it from the dropdown menu.

I can type !b faster than you can click to drop down and select your engine.

yeah but you still have to go to duckduckgo.com. Plus searching people or things on google often shows a wikipedia page on the side and they have great weather reports if you just type "weather:[location]". Not to mention they are adding new things all the time. I just search "grams of carbs in peanut butter" and it has a little app for calculating all kinds of nutrition facts that uses the USDA databases. Really just can't beat google right now. They may have a lot of ads, but you can see them and look past them.

Didn't even hear of DDG, it does look nice.

I don't believe it will be the next Google, but I do like surprises

Yeah, from a user-experience perspective they are great. This is what is the most important.

I had tried switching a couple of times in the past, but always ended up back with Google as results quality was much better (albeit not always great, but competitors are worse). These days, it just seems so much better. Normally the first result provides what I want. Spam results seem a much rarer occurrence and they are dealing with reported spam quickly (e.g. the other day, ugg boots had a very spammy, black hat site in the top ten results, but it didn't last long after reporting it).

Yeah, honestly can't even remember the last time I needed to look at the second page of results. What I want is always on first page.

And with DuckDuckGo there is no pagination. More results are added as you scroll down.

I can understand people being so trained just to use whatever google gives them after a while, but you reach a point where the results littered with ads. I personally prefer less ads, but maybe you like ads more than organic results?

    Not me!

If duck ever got the userbase of google, all the spammers would try to rank for it and turn it into the same cesspool. Same goes for bing, yahoo, yandex etc. Imo the reason people dont stop using google is because they are great at marketing. Why are chromebooks so cheap? Because google is willing to take a loss to get more people using their services and click on adsense, making them a much bigger profit in the long run. Ask anyone for a word associated with search engines, it will no doubt be google and its going to take years, maybe decades for that to change.

DuckDuckGo's privacy angle advertisement is pretty hilarious. They basically said "use Google and get STD third party ads following you around."

Use Google and get STDs? LOL!

I didn't notice any ads stalking me, so I'm OK.

Google is still good for organic result.
You just have to know which keyword to target.

So had a meeting with a customer today as we used my laptop to make a plan for a couple of hours. Multiple times I used DuckDuckGo and they became increasingly interested without my saying anything. They plan to try it. Really DDG is google when you need it to be with a simple "!g", but it is so much more. 2

I'm in the middle of a major copyright fight with one of the web's biggest sites. Searching for my stolen text on Google - I'm dead last after the initial thief and several others. (A trend I'm seeing with all of the pieces regularly being scraped/stolen from my sites.)

DDG only returns my site. For one of my other sites, it only returned my site in the #1 position and one of the oldest stolen versions that I am continually having to have removed - again, Google ranks my original last.

DDG has at least one of the stolen pages indexed but it was hard to even find it - gotta say I'm loving that!

Now I'm wondering if they don't generally recognize any copies and try to just display the originals. That alone would make it worthwhile in my book. Use Google to spot thieves. Use DDG to find sites being run by honest folks who don't steal and offer something they actually deserve credit for.

Thinking about DDGs dontbubble.us information. Basically says that everyone's searches are being filtered through a personal Google filter. I never liked my Internet experience to be filtered. Never liked a big company guessing what I want to see in my searches. So wrong.
