DMOZ is free of banners, if you do in that way it would be a business directory not ODP.

Another problem, how can you get so much money and human resource to do that, you need a big supporter first such as dmoz is supported by AOL. if you say you start at 2 editors when could it gets big as dmoz, waiting for another 8 years?

Having banners at the submission page will not affect any one in any way and most of the visitors will look the advertisements at the submission page

and why are you afraid that a Big sponsor needs to support it

Dmoz was first started without a sponsor Thenm on

    see here

So Dmoz was started without a sponsor

Also I am looking for editors thats onyl I am posting here

Do you think you can make another google?

DMOZ has been successful and there will be another dmoz? Why yahoo not start its own ODP? You are not the first got the idear.

It has nothing to do with hosting,
your best argument can be it is under construction, and in that case you are not allowed to put adsense in it.

No to discourage you in any way but I'm just wondering, how are you going to manage 500 000 categories without a database? Even if you have only one link in every category the amount of data is huge.

Thats want I am asking editors over here

Since it does not runs on a database

A editor has to edit the pages in a HTML editor

and just upload it by an FTP and I will add it to the directory

also these will be static html pages and each page would be 5KB

    500000x5=2500000KB

    1 GB=1,000,000 KB

So its not that much space even if it is 10KB

This is foolish. To make a competitor of DMOZ you have to make it

    a) easy on editors to add something
    b) easy on editors to change something
Both of these imply that asking them to type HTML is really not going to work. Look at wikipedia. It's easy to work with - so many people contribute.

I don't have time to read all 3 pages and I'll put down 3 steps, how can you build new DMOZ:

    1. Buy hosting and very good domain and set up directory
    2. Get lost of quality links and wait to next PR update
    3. When you won't be able to review all links pay some editors(ex. 10$ per day for editing one category, if he don't work good just fire him)
    4. Take all profit(if there is any profit :D )

Just take the risk on you. :D

    Sorry for bad english. :D

    sorry for bumping this thread

    TO KH7 queries

Yes user or editors would able to add pages and edit it

but I would say it would run on static html pages

since databases take a lot of bandwidth and php load

    I decided this way

I have also found out a way to edit those pages

Just wait some more weeks you will know it how it works clearly

I have said that it would not run on database means the data base would not be exposed to visitors and queries will not be from databases

Thats what I have said that It would not run on database
