However, other people just prefer to put links up on social statuses, while yet other people like to put up social bookmarks. What do you prefer? Is it wise to stick to only one or try a variety of strategies?

i like to mix it up, but the most important today (in my opinion) are the social website links... there was a time when you could just get thousands of links to your website and get on the first page but now Google is really strict and you will get penalized if you do that, now they just love social presence... and to be honest in some case it just make the job easier

My advice is to do all strategies simultainlesly! Forum marketing, blog commenting and building up social media presence is crutial. I'm thinking on free ways to increase traffic here! If you have a budget to spend you can test some paid resources too!
In addition what's already been mentioned in this thread, I use feedly to find niche relevant blogs for commenting. Feedly is a free Firefox add on and it allows you to add and organize relevant high traffic blogs. Open feedly and you will see new posts and if you're a bit lucky you can be among the first people to add your blog comment (=> more web traffic to your links).
