because it is a good content management system, and it is very configurable, you can modify templates easily, add/remote modules, and you can make it to look exactly how you like.

Oh - just because it's user friendly then I guess...alternative to Dreamweaver and HTML or something?

Joomla is a CMS. It is used to create sites and has many benefits. One of the biggest benefits is that you don’t have to know any programming language to create a site. The modules let you add new functionalities to your site and offer many services all without the need to program anything.

It is far different from what is Dreamweaver .
In dreamweaver , u just code or design you pages and upload them . Include updates by hand editing the pages continously .

In case of joomla , u install it in the web server . It just shows u a box , where u enter the content , and it , carries on the work of creating the WEb pages for u .

According to the template , your content will be generated to fit the styles . No work is actually , necessary to create or hand edit your pages .

Try it at home , using a personal web server .

Try to see , "Running and Testing Joomla Without a Hosting Account" in ,
    http://dev.joomla.org/content/view/2013/93/

I have been tinkering with it a little bit - I guess all the hype is just because it's so user-friendly, and requires no coding knowledge.

Joomla is no other thing that Mambo in disguise, a content management system which developement was stopped.

Why people love it so much? more likely because they are lazy and this is the easy way to go one-click via cPanel and other control panels.

    No offense, though

Check out www.profitgeek.com. That's a Joomla site with a modified template. The admin panel is nice also.

Hmm, I think I'd like to use Joomla. I was actually in the planning stages of a custom CMS, but this looks like it could be exactly what I need...

I have been tinkering with Joomla on www.nokia-theme.com. So far it seems pretty customizable with no road blocks ..

When creating pages from scratch by hand it can get pretty lame fixing countless design issues. Something like Joomla really eliminates that problem.

If you after a more down to basics CMS to integrate into your own full web design then look up CMS Simple. Joomla is a quick and easy cms, I personally think its great, but creating your own custom modules, components, or mambots is waaayy over my head and then thats where you'll have to fork out some money for it, otherwise, its completely free

Don't know where you got that idea as development has never stopped on Mambo. Mambo was disrupted when the fork occurred, but has continued on as strong as ever. Things certainly stopped on the old forum, but Mambo moved to its own sites earlier this year. mambo-foundation.org

Development is continuing in a different direction to Joomla, which is a good thing as it gives us all more choice.
