To try and explain it even easier than they did:

Exit Rate: Always calculated even if they didn't start or end on the page. If they went from Page C in the last example to another page in your site then it is positive. If they left your site after visiting Page C then it is a negative. 50% of people in that example either visited another page, or exited the site through Page C. 2 for 2, out of a total of 4.

Bounce Rate: Only calculated if they entered the site on that page. Never calculated if they got to the page from another page on your site (the preceding page would get the bounce rate). So in the above example of Page C again. They only came in on Page C once and they exited after reading it. So it is 100% bounce.

What does this info above tell us? Perhaps that Page C is not a very strongly written page compared to the other two pages. And that Page B is definitely better than Page C as an incoming page that locks the reader in. So in that example I would rewrite Page C for sure.

A confusing part about the example is Page A on the bounce rate. They say it didn't start any sessions so therefor it has a 0%. This is not true as it did start the session on Wednesday in the example. But the person left the page to Page C which means they didn't bounce. That is why it is a 0%.

That day also is why I might rewrite Page C. Nobody seems to like it.

Of course it might also be the transitional page leading to the affiliate companies page. If that were the case then it would be OK that people leave on Page C, but not if they are leaving Page C to go to Pages A and B. That wouldn't make sense in the "funnel".

Funnel wise, some pages that are great "exit" pages, may mean that your LINK leading to them and the CONTENT on the page are mismatched.

    1. Check for relative time people spend on your top exit pages.
    2. Short? Mismatch. (Of course this depends on the content, classic example is "Thank You!" page, naturally has high exit rate, as it should).
    3. Long? They got their answer, even if it's not the answer you want them to have/they haven't bought a product.

Bounce rate is the percentage of visits, who have entered on a particular page, go no further than that page during their session. Exit rate is a kind of bounce rate that doesn't care about how you got to the page. It still relies on some page being the last page viewed within the visit session however.

Bounce rate refers to the percentage of visitors who view only one page of your website before leaving and exit rate is defined as the percentage of visitors who leave your site from a given page based on how many visits that the particular page has received. Bounce rate = total № of visitors who only view a single page /total № of visitors who enter to that page x100
Exit rate= total № nod exits/ total № of page views (no visits but pageviews)
