How to figure out why google has penalized me?

Hi, I like many out there have been hit by the new updates that have been rolled out in the past 2 years the thing is I've never done any seo linking (ok i've sold a few links to relative sites) but other then that i have done nothing, i keep all my meta keywords relative to the content and thats about the only SEO i do.

The thing that is pissing me off so bad is that i checked one of my competitors site and noticed how f'spammy his site is and how much keyword stuffing he does yet he has 10's of pages ranking on not just one keyword but almost every keyword related to the topic.. its almost like mat cut himself owns the site. wtf?

I don't know what to do, don't know where to start or how to fix this.. only thing i can think of if disavow tool all the unknown domains linking to me and rewrite the content so there is no seo what so ever??

I also noticed that i have way more backlinks than my competitor, could it be that google thinks these backlinks are unnatural? it can't be the quality of links because my competitor seems to have the same if not worse.

im so fustrated right now.. i don't deserve this, i've spent so much time on my sites over the years and now i'm f#$ed

if you are still selling links, stop that first.

it can be frustrating to see your competitors rank higher than you having spammier links but thats how it works with google. they can't identify 100% sites with spam links so some of the sites having spam links may not get penalty. no matter how big and advanced their algorithm, its not perfect for which they are having to modify it on a regular basis.

if you have spammy or low quality links, identify them and use the disavow tool. if your site is penalized, you may need to submit a reconsideration request once you correct the issues.

Thanks Ashley, this is what I was looking for, it's like hidden on gwt.
I'll try it. At least I will add broken links. Are there any tool that check a backlink quality?
