My mom has a huge osteoporosis blog. How can she monetize it?

Discussion in 'General Business' started by Citizen, Apr 12, 2013.

My mom owns and is the solo author of OsteoDiet.com. We did it together as a project when she was diagnosed a few years ago. Since then, she now gets 10,000 visitors per month just doing this for fun. I talked to her the other day about monetization and she'd like to make money with it but doesn't want to sell out and put ads for pharmaceuticals, etc.

    Any ideas, suggestions, or advice?

Edit: for clarification, she was able to normalize her osteoporosis without having to use pharmaceutical drugs, which is why she's getting so much traffic. Basically what she did was eat a really healthy diet designed for healthy bones and she got better (and lost a lot of weight). That's why she doesnt want to advertise for stuff she doesn't believe in.

    Hello...

You can always try Google ads. Seeing is how her blog is more focused on the health side rather than the RX, you will have to approach companies to advertise from that niche, since they are not contacting you. This however can take time and you do have to find the right contacts.

However, sites like this can really bring in a good income when it comes to ads.

Hoover.com is or was a good free place to look for advertiser contacts.

A good place to start is contacting companies that promote this type of lifestyle in their product.

Adsense is great for that niche - people with problems tend to click on ads (they are looking for solutions).

If she's that knowledgeable on the subject, she could consider writing an eBook and selling it or see if any osteoporosis products she uses have an affiliate program.

There's some tricky area about giving medical advice if you aren't a doctor. Watch out for that. Otherwise, you'll definitely want to find some kind of affiliate product and some AdSense (or something comparable).

Try to look at clickbank.com , find some good product and put it on site, also adsense could be good.

Try to build email opt in list so you can build some more passive income because money is in the list :)

Ultimately, she may want to look into having paid subscribers and / or a paid download of some sort (like an e-book).

If you mom recommends a specific food, vitamin or product you could try contacting the seller about sponsoring the site or setting up an affiliate program.

you can actually monetize the site with multiple methods at the same time. You should really test it out, you already got a good number of visitors so all methods should work, but you should test it out to see which one works the best.

My point is the site is actually not that big. First try to pile up visitors

She could monetise it with Google ads. But i`m sure the ads will be about pharmaceutical products. I can`t think of any other way, but ads.

You can promote your moms blog on paid2click.com to advertise the blog and get traffic with low cost.

You can collect people's email addresses on the first page and send out email newsletters every week. This way you build up a huge list of subscribers. If anybody wants to advertise their business within your newsletters, he has to pay you. It's called solo ads, there is a huge market out there. I know people who are willing to pay over $1000 and more for 1 single email ad.

Another think you can do is product reviews. They'll pay you and you will write a product review for them. You can get a lot of money for that starting at $150 I guess.

She can recommend healthy products, books, supplements, etc. as an Amazon affiliate. If she is just doing it for fun and isn't interested in putting too much forced effort into monetizing the blog - I would stick with the Amazon method of recommending products that she's tried and thought were helpful. With the Amazon Associates program you can get specific, and she doesn't have to worry about junk advertisements being placed on her site from Google Ads. Also, she can do this in a more natural way, so it doesn't appear as if she sold out.

For health related sites, ClickBank has good products and you know commission rate is really good, you can monetize your blog the way you want so it would be flexible for you, I think.

    Thanks everyone for the advice.

I think she's interested in doing an eBook but she's not sure where to publish it. Any ideas?

eJunkie, PayDotCom or Clickbank just to name a few. Realistically you could sell it with just a Paypal payment link but if you want affiliates as in other people selling it for her, it would be better to join an affiliate network.

She should make diet plans and sell them. Put together a starter kit to help people get on track.
