hm, this used to work for many years, but any more, at least not for many. in the past it worked for almost anybody who would manage to build a quality backlinks. nowadays thousands of webmasters find that it is not as effective any more.

Although I never had that good of success, I would say social bookmarking helped me. And not just "do for doing" social bookmarking, but "do for self" kinda.

I registered on Digg.com for a website of mine and I started following people that were in the niche of my site. Not only did it give me knowledge about it, but those users were golden to communicate with and are in my contacts even now.

It did help the traffic, in quality and not quantity though.

The best technique i've been using lately is modifying all of the anchor text backlinks pointing to our site.

After years of crafting keyword enhanced backlinks, we've now gone through most of the process of either modifying or removing them.

This process has helped us to maintain pretty good rankings for most of our targetted keyword phrases
