If you read any respected seo factors article you will read that twitter is apparently very important factor for improving one's google ranking for given keywords. so if this is true could somebody explain how exactly is this done? what is being counted exactly? tweets sends from the pages of the given website or the mention of the url or what?

Google doesn't crawl Twitter anymore nor links in tweets, so I really doubt that there are any SEO benefits.

Twitter doesn't get you on Google. Facebook will.

In the past I have seen some individual tweets rank fairly high for certain keyphrases used within the tweet providing the user quite a few click throughs from there.

There are also quite a few twitter profiles which rank for some good terms drawing traffic to them.

So my answer is: Indirectly yes. But I strongly doubt that it helps your site rank higher.

But again: If you get retweeted and people read your posts en masse, some of them might link to you from forums, blogs, etc.

It is a snowball effect when it hits and if it hits, but I wouldn't worry about whether or not it benefits your site in terms of getting a backlink or any of those myths that are floating around.

Isn't that just the one link set in the profile? Because Google is certainly not crawling links in my tweets.

Not the profile link. There are deep links tweeted by other users.

    They appears like this:

    Ha. That is really interesting.

Let me change my previous statement: Google doesn't crawl tweets (+ included links) unless pople link to them on the web (Google has stopped crawling Twitter in real time a long time ago).

Simple redirects, so Google counts they as links to the page they refers, I suppose.

The answer is I do not know. But since Google crawls the Tweets, picks up the t.co urls, they *might* measure popularity (through favorites, retweets etc.) and boost your rankings based on that.

Their official version goes that they don't.

I think Google is looking at a number of "Social Indicators" as they do with everything. Specifically, in regards to Twitter, I think about social and the vitality of it all. To find out if something is relevant in its rankings I would look at how many people are talking about a specific link or page, whether that comes in the form of public shares or @'s. I would also look at the number of times it is retweeted and the viral spread of that page over a period of time. Do you see a bell curve where a link starts out with a few retweets and then quickly rises over a short amount of time until it reaches its peak and slows back down? They might also look at who is sharing these tweets as well.

The links from Twitter are nofollow and there is no anchor text, just URL itself. From SEO point of view Twitter gives nothing, even opposite, you might find Twitter page before your website for your main keyword or site name searches.
But Twitter can send you nice traffic, and I believe at the end of the day this is what we all looking for - visitors.
I checked my website and found many links from Twitter and some are pretty fresh from end of March.

But there is another way to use Twitter to improve your rankings - placing tweets on your website. Tweets are the best source of keywords! I don't think I need to explain that, but limitation of 140 characters forces people to be short and straight to the point. So, if you put that content on your website, you get a lot of good keywords. Twitter search APIs is the way to go.
You can see the example of one of the pages on my website: http://www.montreallisting.ca/priva...econdary/school/loyola-high-school-school-15/ - check on this page "Latest Tweets about ..."
