I want to know about the working of Google? How it works in terms of SEO? What are the basic steps of working?

Google has small programs to search for sites/web pages on the internet, these programs are known as robots or spiders or crawlers. They read your web page and send it to Google for indexing that page in its database. then Google looks for its content quality, value, and backlink portfolio to rank that page in its search results as per the queries related to that page's content.

2) On Page Optimization
3) Off Page Optimization
4) Age of the website
5) User activity, & experience

Sometimes, I have the feeling Google doesn't work

 

That must be nothing but myth. There is no reason why Google would act against your site. However, there may be reasons like virus or malware in plugins, which may hinder the indexing.

Google is like a giant directory, you type a keyword and you search the directory.

Google knows who links to who of all the websites in it's directory, and basically the website with most number of backlinks having the searcher keyword in anchor text ranks #1 (there are other criteria of course but that's basically it).
