It is a syndication feed from your website that is used to publish your work, like blogs or news articles from a website. People can copy the feed link and subscribe to it using readers like google reader or flipboard. That way they can read the posts from your website without having to actually go to your website.
@stlgolfforum is right In layman's language, RSS is a text format ( generally XML) which can be read by various softwares from mobile and PC. In this way, if you update your content, people who are subscribed to your RSS feed will get update on their readers that so and so feed has been updated. SO it is uselful - To update the user without him coming to your site everytime and see what is new. It is easier to read on the mobile phone or a tablet The user gets to keep all the websites feed in one place so many prefer RSS feed ( you should use one). It's like a supermarket instead of having individual stores for each product. You can easily share it Problems It is difficult to monetize since your sidebar ads are not there(mostly) Analytics is not as good as it is for web and since you are getting more visitors from RSS readers to your site, it is good for SEO.
I do not know is RSS feed is good for SEO, but is good for visitors to get your latest articles from your site in their RSS reader without searching on site.

RSS Feed main work is increase the traffic of blog/site and update the users with new posts. RSS full form is Really Simply Syndication, as its name is showing it is a very simply syndication and It is easy to use. I think RSS feed helps only in traffic not in SEO.
