Hello, yes it is good, go and submit .pdf files, .ppt files, .doc files... And make sure to have your links in them No matter how big files are, even if it's just one article, or just one page, it's good... Again, just make sure to have your links in it.
Better for rankings? No. I tested it out and it gets barely any links. The ones that do appear (in Google Webmaster Tools) either don't pass value (some that I have are on PR2 pages, but the page they are linking to is still PR0 after two PR updates) or are nofollow. Quite a few of the document sites remove links when GoogleBot crawls the page (you can check which ones by looking at the cache). Depending on the topic, you might get traffic from the bigger document sites, so that would be the only possible benefit.
Please ensure the backlinks is indexed by Google. Don't talk about the backlinks type, because the effective backlinks is the backlinks that indexed by search engine, beside of that find the high pagerank backlinks.
