    We have re-written the description mete tags a couple of days ago. But the new ones are still not showing up in Google search. How long does it take to update it?

    It would take at least 7 days, or longer as well, so you have to wait for this period.

    Have some patience (did you also use Google Webmaster Tools to tell Google to fetch the pages again?), but also remember that the meta description might not always be used (Google might take a relevant snippet from the page).

    Resubmit the Sitemap to google webmaster tools, so that it will catch soon the new description in the google search results.

    Try this: Google Webmaster Tools > Health > Fetch As Google > "Fetch" the URLs of the changed pages > click "Submit to Index". This is a tip given by Google's Matt Cutts.

    Don't abuse it. But it can lead to a quick recrawl of changed pages.

    As soon as the meta description is changed it will not displayed in Google, it must get cache and indexed in Google so that you can see the tags in Google

    You can submit your site for cache in GWT. After submitting your site, it will take max. 7 to 10 days .

    I am agree with Jim & you can submit link on Google webmaster. Or to optimize the meta tags, you can submit your articles on high page rank websites. These will help you to optimize your meta tags in quick time. But to optimize the tags, you must enter your tags in meta description.
