I find Windows 7 more easier to use, but there are advantages and disadvantages to both of it. So... Dreamwell it depends on different things what you choose.

Windows XP great for gaming performance but installation of softwares etc slow...
Windows 7 fast, stable, installation of games, softwares are faster than xp but gaming performance is little bit slower than in xp.
Now mostly new motherboard doesn't support xp. So best way to use windows 7

For low specifications, of course it's Windows XP. In my PC I had Windows XP, everything ran smooth and fast with 2.00 GB RAM and fine graphics card. I thought upgrading to Windows 7 would make my PC faster, but in fact it did the opposite! Now, I am downgrading my PC to Windows XP again. However, Windows 7 runs super fast on High Specifications, especially essential for gamers like me.

We have to agree the fact windows 7 is far better than windows xp with a lot of new functionality. It is a fact that 7 requires minimum 2 gb ram and that is similar to win xp on a 256 mb RAM. Now a days memory is not that costly and even 8gb of memory will not cost us that much. So with all these high end specification if we start using win 7, will never look back at win xp.
In terms of stability - A lot of people has commented win xp is more stable. I don't think so. I have used win 7 for more than a year now and never experienced something called crashing. Prior to this my OS was XP and it used to crash, not very often though like 98. Win 7 is stable and needs high hardware specifications.

Windows 7 ftw, but Windows XP will be good for a low specs computer. :)
