I would say that directory submission is still effective if you are doing seo for Google and other search engine but you have to do it with quality.

First of all, you should link your sites to as many Google products (Google places, Google+, Google map, shopping, directory, YouTube, blogger) as you can, you would get good benefit from this.

And you need to use some relevant and quality directories but do it slowly, you would get benefit!

And who was that "Somebody", please enlighten us.

And Directory Submission has not been "banned"... Could you qualify your statements by backing them up with some real concrete evidence of your claims?

Directory submissions are effective only if the website is being submitted in high page rank quality sites. Only then the site can get valuable backlinks. Else directory submissions are not effective.

Follow a steady link building strategy. Do blog submissions, Article submissions, Forum participation, RSS feeds, social bookmarking of the website on high page rank quality sites, profile building, photos and videos sharing. All these would definitely make your website attain a good page rank

I think based on the latest SEO changes the value of quality niche directories has increased and value of poorly made general directories has (thankfully) decreased

directory submission is effective if all submission are manual and content different contents
same contents and single anchor text everywhere can penalize as spam

There is a huge border between poor directories (link farm) and quality directories. Directory will never die. Otherwise DMOZ would be the first.

I have very old and successful directories and find that directory submission today is just as effective as it was 12 years ago when large directories prevailed over primitive search engines.

People need to stop listening to this <insert thing> is dead garbage. Where do people read that crap? Do the people there use the same butchered English? Is that why you can't understand?

If you want to talk in the forums you really need to communicate better. I am all for tolerance and trying to understand, but when you talk in these ridiculous one-line-chewed-up-and-spat-out questions you're either a poorly coded spambot or you just really need to communicate better.

SEO isn't dead, Directory Submission isn't dead.

You heard it from an expert. There ya go. Spread the word :)

no, I don't think that it's dead. It still works. But you'd better high page rank quality sites to get the valuable backlinks.
