Having compact and most requires information in your website can make sure that your visitors would like to stay on your website or not. But it is still very much challenging to be on the first search page. I have got some points in my experience to consider when you have really very short budget. These are:

Know your market.Your strategy can not tackle the point if you do not know your audience exactly. Prior to spending time and cost, you must first define your audience. If you know your marketing area then you need not to hire any costly marketing experts and you can do your optimization yourself.

Define and redefine goals.Define what your purpose to be in internet marketing is. Got understanding? Boosted monthly income? There may be more than one goal, but keep on them to keep track your income. Whenever you get any goal then you should define another one instead of going after random goals.

Set a budget. You have got your audience and defined goals. Now it is time to think about your marketing budget. You must set it in your mind that you can complete your online marketing goals even with tight financial resources. There are a number of free of cost marketing platform. But relying on only free resources is never a good strategy. Define what kind of outlets you think are most vital and spend some money for them.

I welcome all here to share any other point of your experience.

I think the content is the important fact in the internet marketing area, the more the content is good and interesting the less budget you can set.

Marketing is always a balance of two things: Time and money. You can spend hours manually sharing links on Facebook or posting links on forums, or you can buy a service that does it for you.

It's not enough, you first need to research the market, your goals and target can change during your research and over time. If you do lots of research you can find less competing areas in your market. Yahoo was once a popular search engine, now they are focused probably more on content and stuff like that because it's easier for them to compete. Once you done your research you can adjust and change your approach.

I would add, Keep an eye on your stats too.
You can learn a lot about your users from your analytics, where are they coming from and what were they searching for to arrive at your site. You can then tailor your keywords to attract more targeted visitors.

To resume... you need a marketing strategy. :)
Getting to know your market is vital for any start-up. Analyzing competition and setting goals depending on that, is a good start.
Setting a budget is rather complicated but nothing that can't be done if you are fully aware of your product/competitors/market.

I totally agree with this. The market is the place to start. Don't worry about products, traffic strategies, or ways to monetize your site until you have this piece of the puzzle nailed down. Focus on finding a market with a need that you can solve. I like to start with a broad niche ("health and fitness" for example). Then I explore that niche and find a sub-niche with a little less competition ("bodyweight exercise routines" for instance). This allows me to make the most of a limited budget and still operate in a market with a need.

Like wounded1987 mentioned about Yahoo, you don't have to try to take over a large niche. Laser focusing your efforts on a submiche, and then becoming the top operator in that subniche, can allow you to see profits faster.

Remember: it all starts with the market.

    Best of luck to you,

    Corey
