If you are getting dofollow links from forum post via signature than it will obviously help you to get link juice to your site and also help in SERP result. If your links are from niche forum than it will be more beneficial.

I don't think forums are a social platform, every forums have certain limitations, forum is for discussing questions or sharing new ideas that helps all, n if its about traffic, everybody in forums is to discuss problems n build good backlinks it will be a rare case if someone you found clicking your signature n exploring your website, n PR, Definately it helps in that, if u build good pr backlinks yours will also improved!!
Forums which are related to your site category are called niche forum. Example if your site is about auto parts, vehicle parts than car and bike forum are niche forum for you.
