Used 99designs and sitepoint for graphics ,
elance when it originally started several years go
Been with guru for atleast last 5 years - definitely the best . Gurus are reliable and I did not find elancers to be that reliable .
    Odesk not so bad .

I used elance quite long time back for two of my sites this is abck in 2000-2001. .. and switched to Guru in 2004 and ever since I am very happy . I think all of these sites function the same way , it is you who would have to Qualify the candidates and also build the relationship. Gurus I have worked with or built relationships I can just give a one line requirement and they can just go and complete the whole work .. it is all about the mind sync . same is the story with the graphic designers . Some are extremely good some are just there .. I guesss the takeaway is - Do your due diligence.

    1. Freelancer - Pays peanuts and has so many conmen
    2. Elance - Pays well but hard to get a job
    3. iWriter - Best site for a for writers
    4. GlobeSkill.com - This is a new site that's coming up. Seems like it will be a great place to hire some freelancers if you are doing internet marketing.
    5. vWorker - Not done much there but seems promising also.

With freelancer sites it's really a question of "suck it and see". A few years ago it was all about Rentacoder (now called Vworker) and Elance. Nowadays, more and more Internet marketers are talking about Odesk.

Certainly, Odesk is less of a trial to use.

But in the end, there are poor quality outsourcers on all the sites. The real trick is to properly qualify and interview your staff before you take them on.

I heard one new trick the other day which is to put a full description of your job in, and three or four paragraphs down say: "Here is a secret word - Mandarin. (Or whatever you want...) If you don't quote the secret word in your reply to me then you will be excluded from consideration immediately."

This trick excludes all potential outsourcers who don't even read the description. Reportedly, it reduces the applicants by 95%! I will certainly be trying this out next time I advertise.

All these outsourcer sites have good people on them; it's just a case of filtering the good ones out. But once you have found a great one, you have hit gold dust :)

The best freelance site is the one where you temporary succeed. Don't expect to earn forever from it.

That's a major problem with many project bidders. Not only do many not read the project description, many just copy/paste a generic response which always includes a million links to past projects, many of which are broken links, dead sites, etc.

On freelancer. if a bidder you select as winner decides to cancel, you lose your project fee. Many bidders will bid like crazy in hopes of landing a project to only cancel when they realize the scope of the project is beyond their skill level.

And for those of you who didn't know, scriptlance was bought out by freelancer about 6 months ago. If I'm not mistaken, didn't freelancer also acquire rentacoder too?

I have worked with many Freelance websites. I like oDesk and Elance also Freelance. But I can't say exactly which one is really good. Since it is totally depend on your profile and your needs. If you are a good designer and looking for a job related to your field you may like 99design.
