    You can look at Article Dashboard script - it is free and simple and of course the most widely used.

    if you have the technical skills, you can also modify directory scripts like phpld, indexu, wsnlinks, esyndicat etc to run an article directory.

    Article Dashboard is well know for being the hackers playground...unsafe, hard to edit, bla bla...
    I'd suggest you consider other options. Free not always means cheaper. :)
