How do you improve local listings on google?
When you place a search for a physical business on google you will see 2 search results then few local results. How do you improve the local results? Does it require a different technique than web site SEO?

You should be getting links from local sites too.

That will be a very specific geographical target.

The future of SEO is purely based on LOCAL SEO ....

The best way to do good for local listings is
    - Google plus places = list your site in Google plus places..
    - Go for yellow pages & while page submission .
    - Engage in famous Geographical sites based on your territory..
Hope you go the point...! Just focus on building link in targeted Geographical sites.that will work..

I disagree. What about a Web business with no physical location? Right?

I think the result are from Google places, if you have created pages on Google Pages and it is optimized good then it may appear in Google search engine too.

    Let me know one thing..!

With out any details how customer going to contact webmaster?
From my view when we are piticularly targeted to some geographical area, obviously we have some location for operation and un till unless the business listed with Google we must have some geo location.
How ever to register a domain it self, at least we need to give state ..
So the major part of geo target marketing will be based on LOCAL SEO concept...!

If you don't have any physical location, then we can't target certain location, simply we need do in general,,,...!

I think you got my point

Now all we are discussing about Google authority ,

Improving local listing on google you need to firstly list your business on google local. Than you can post classifieds in various sites with map information. Currently getting more and better google reviews regarding your business will help you to list better in google local listing as well as Google SERP. You can also list your business on various local listing sites like yelp, foursquare and many other sites.

Add your local phone number, this is one factor that Google looks at.

Yellow pages has no bearing on local listings. Yell.com is pretty much a glorified SEO directory at the moment. Google Local/Places for Business seems to have a number of almost ranking factors like the standard search results.

One of the main ones unsurprisingly is the actual location of your business and how this relates to what Google determines as the centre point for that location. So if you have a mechanic business in london if you search in Google Maps for London, a pointer will be dropped at what Google thinks is the centre point. When you start searching for actual businesses such as 'mechanics in london' it will look for the closest mechanics Google Places for Business listings to that point.

The closer you are to that point, the better you will rank for this term in Google Local/Places for Business and Universal search when the local listings are included on the first page of some localised search queries.

This is the general rule I've got from experience in this area, but there are other factors that can help your business (so no need to up sticks and move location just yet!), having a fully optimised listing can help your cause so including descriptions of the business, opening hours, an optimised business title and any videos or photos which you can upload yourself too.

It also factors into the Google+ page for the business too. So it's wise to at least dedicate some time in setting that up for your business/each branch.

Reviews are important too, whether these are Google's built in ones via Google+ or through 3rd party review sites like TrustPilot.

Let me know if anyone needs any more specific advice.

i think you should study a course on local seo because no body has idea what they are talking about they tell you do this and do this and finally you will get the results is not like that seo is an art if you learn that how to do this correctly you will be amazed the power of seo.
it is always better than ask to experts who have experience in this field. go to google and search for best seo course.

rubbish. all the of the advice given here is what you'd want to do as a small business/large business to get improvements in Google Places for Business.

SEO courses are a waste of time and money, you learn far more by doing it yourself, finding out about the various elements as and when you come to them. sounds like someone ranks for 'best seo course' ;)
