Hello all.... I own a real estate brokerage and have taken in millions of dollars of revenue in the last few years because Ive been selling properties in a major U.S. city and getting leads from the internet (and also spending a lot of money on it).

Im 30 years old..... and was an expert 5 years ago on SEO.... but Ive lost touch with it as Ive just been focusing on content for my site..... and tweaking title tags etc. here and there... and pay a lot for Google Adwords to boost the site on keywords it doesnt rank for.

This was what was important 5 years ago when I became an expert on SEO:

    1) Domain name #1 important

    2) Title Tags

    3) Having sites link to you especially mentioning that keyword (anchor links)

With these 3 factors.... I could rank for a keyword.

For instance if I wanted to rank for Red Cars

I could have the domain name RedCars.com .. have the Title tag mention Red Cars... then sites link to me im all set.

Ive kind of lost touch the last few years in Organic SEO as Ive been paying attention more so to the Paid Google Adwords......

But I need to get back to my Organic SEO roots.... thats what saves money, and gets better organic leads..... a lot of the paid leads that I spend $100,000's on are often junk, and fake phone #'s... however many of them are real so its well worth it for me to do Adwords so heavily as my business now depends on it.

But I want to get back to the Organic SEO.... and I feel ive been out of touch the last few years.

What do you guys think, what has changed in Google SEO the last 5 years?

    Hii Frankie J,

In the last 5 years Google search algorithm has changed a lot. Now google takes more focus on websites content. Content of website should be new, latest and updated. Google has made many updates like panda, penguin and Emd. Now the google crawler becomes more clever to find and penalize that websites which uses black hat seo techniques like cloaking, keyword stuffing and content duplicating. Google also includes knowledge graph and semantic search to enhance its search results and to generate more relevant results to the searcher. Google has started penalizing those websites which put their main keyword in their domains and are of low quality. In other words this is called Exact match domain websites. The main idea behind all of this is to provide relevant results to the searcher.

If you've been making millions, just hire someone who is up to do date with SEO :)
These days it's more important than ever to make your approach look natural. Links and keywords are still important, but you can't overdo it. You have to use enough variety in your link anchor text and link sources. Domain name isn't too important these days, but it still can help. Also Google pays more attention to weeding out junk sites. So you have to be sure your site isn't filled with validation errors or takes too long to load.

In the last fiver years Google has made several updates to the way that we are able to rank sites. The most recent update was exact match domain, which hit sites ranking for their emd. This mainly hit people with backlinks that are the same as their domain, basically the search term their going after. Like SS-Q said your domain isn't important but it does help having a good one. Now you half to focus on providing quality content and having link diversity if you want to get high rankings/keep your ranking. Especially if your going after competitive keywords. Good luck getting back to seo, if you would like I can send you a few blogs about seo which are good to follow.

One thing im glad .... I never messed with Black Hat SEO..... I was interested in it, and read about it.... but never got into it the link schemes all that cross linking... and so glad I didnt. One thing I used to speculate on, and this may have become a reality from articles im seeing online, is Google will penalize a site with an "un natural inbound link structure". I know everyone says "inbound links cant hurt" -- but I do believe it has some weight. A site should have natural lnk patterns inbound do follow no follow exact anchor and some variety.

You need to link to relevant articles within your site as well. If you have an article on losing weight and a related article that talks about a diet regimen to lose weight then you can link the two together using the appropriate anchor text, usually your target keyword. Guest posting is getting big so make sure to try that, not only to build a backlink to your site, but to get more traffic to it as well.

Hope that helps. Have a good day!
