    As far i know Google impacts negative results for low quality link building in any year.. So, you better stick with quality links..
    These are the 2 methods which i follow to gain natural links..

    1)Guest blogging.
    2)Social media contest.

    There will be more steps taken by Google to get rid of spam backlinks. Guest blogging and social media are likely to dominate off page SEO.

    I don't think press releases have been effective for gaining links for quite some time now. My approach is (and has always been) to work on gaining links from a wide variety of sources. Becoming an expert in your field is the best way to gain quality, in-bound links. Just my 2c....
