Article marketing/submission still has its place in my opinion. But not mass submission using spun content. Write good quality, relevent, informative articles of around 500 words each. A nice call to action in the resource box and a link back to your site using appropriate key words, "click here" or the plain URL - mix it up a bit for variety. Submit to a few of the leading directories such as ezinearticles, goarticles and incorporate in to your link building strategies. How effective it is alone for SEO/ranking - who knows, tough as part of your link building plan I'd say (based on my own experience) it shouldn't hurt and there's the potential for direct traffic through the links in the resource box/author bio at the end of the article.

It is still quite effective but the key to success is submitting quality content on high ranked article website. Quality content means not using duplicate, rephrased content. If you use unique content for article syndication you will surely get good results.

Submitting articles to other sites will build up your reputation as an authority in your subject matter. It will also provide you with back links from high ranking sites that have relevant keywords to your site content. It can be very time consuming but it is worth it in the end, I recommend trying to do a couple articles a week and build from there if you have the time.
