a friend asked me what domain they should register for their new blog and gave some examples. do you think they should register a domain in their name e.g. firstname-secondname(dot)com or related to the topic e.g. topicname-blog(dot)com ?

Just using it for a personal blog?

If they have a nickname, use that if the domain is available. I'd stay clear of using dashes in domain names however.

It really depends what their goal is. If they plan on branding with their name then use their name by all means. But personally I would prefer a keyword domain such as keywordblog.com or some sort of brandable name related to the topic at hand.

Definitely stick with .com no matter what and avoid hyphens imho.

If you prefer keyword domain rather than the your personal name then it would be good for branding etc.

I will said depend with his content .
If he would like his blog to look like professional then go with blog that with topic keywords that you always post about.
If your blog content more likely to be personal lifestyle and story then put your name as the keywords of the domain name and it can help you to build your personal name as brand name as well.

yeah i guess the main keyword(s) would be first choice without numbers, dashes, and typos. people can then of course learn more about you later.

If it's for a personal purpose means a personal Blog or like you can choose a domain with first name or second name etc. If it's for a brand and for a brand name reputation try to register a domain name with the keyword. I think that's better. Avoid dashes...

    Good luck....................

Always registered domain related to your topic. It makes no sense to register domain in personal name.

For a personal Blog, the first option might be alright. The second one is better in any case. Even if its a personal blog and you want to monetize it, you should target a keyword which is better.
