My Competitor has 4000+ Backlinks, Should I try to unseat him ?

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by jdeeze, Nov 28, 2006.

I used backlink watch to see how much keywords the #1 guy on google for a specific word. His site is not optimized at all and my content would trump him. Can I unseat him even though he has so many backlinks...mind you 70% of those backlinks are from the same website. #1 is it doable ? #2 what can I use to check backlinks properly, or backlinkwatch works just ok ?

You can always scratch your way to the top with legitimate SEO, don't be spammy, build the backlinks and you'll get there...but it won't happen tomorrow.

I wouldn't worry about the number of backlinks your competitor has, especially if they are all from the same sites. There are so many other factors and total backlinks is only one.

That many backlinks will sure give them an advantage.
However, natural built backlinks last longer. For example, article sites will keep your links for as long as they exist.
Also, I've noticed that a huge growth of backlinks all of a sudden will not help the site rank better, at least for three months.

Backlinkwatch is highly reliable - that's what I feel.

You can surely beat him for that keyword, by getting more backlinks. But like they say, haste makes waste. Don't be in a hurry to build your links - build them slowly but steadily.

Spamming around your links might degrade your site rather than helping it. Do link exchanges with related sites, write articles about your website and post them on your blogs (or get other people to post them on theirs'). Incontent links get more attention by SEs than spammed links.

Try to get 5 to 10 backlinks a day ... as a goal (find blogs related to your niche). You should be making some progress real quickly if you do that. You can always buy high pr links as well...

4000 isn't too much, espacially as you if those links aren't worth much.

I think if you work a little bit, not even hard, you'll get there.

Just keep working and the success will come.

It's encouraging to know that even a site with 4000 backlinks is easy to defeat over a period of months...

    cool....

    Lets get to work.

If it is google then quantity of links is no matter. If you can get yourself 20 good quality links it may be enough to uproot him depending on the quality of your competitors links.

4000 backlinks isn't difficult to get. The problem is, you've spent too much time on DigitalPoint, you are stuck in the mindset of link exchanges and directory submission. Those have to be the dumbest, most non-creative ways to get backlinks.

Think out of the box if you want to be successful.

You make a good point but directory submissions aren't relevant either. Directories are basically masked link dumps. They are created by webmasters for webmasters. No "normal" people actually use them.

It's a good point! I would say that bulk directory submissions should be carried out only after you have a good base of quality, powerful, relevant links, and are out of the sandbox and trusted by Google. At that point quantity can be effective.

But starting out, I don't think so.

Not quite true. Directories such as Dmoz/google dir, Yahoo and others are actively used. Yes the small dime a dozen directories are basically useless.

Running a website is like owning a business. You don't want to conform and do the same thing everyone else does or you will never get ahead. Getting 5-10 new backlinks a day via link exchanges, article submissions, directory submissions, etc. is the same thing that HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of other webmasters are doing, might I add, these are mostly unsuccessful webmasters. Use your creativity, read lots of books, learn new stuff, then use it all to come up with something brilliant. It is possible to get thousands of relevant links a day, you just need to know how.

It hurts to see so many people being so... not creative.

Sitewide links are not helping much in terms of SERPs, in fact they can lower your rankings if you are a new site, or don`t have many authority links. You should plan for getting backlinks from relevant sites with variety of anchor texts matching your target keywords.

Use www.thesaurus.com to vary anchor text with synonyms, it keeps things unique and is very useful for ranking better in the SERPs.
