But does it matter if it is Do-Follow or No-Follow?

    Two things about these links.

    1. Every SEO expert loves to point on the value about these links, but so what? Who here can honestly say that they have do follow links from a .gov or .edu site? It's not like Harvard.edu is going to be linking to any of our blogs any time soon.

    2. They are valuable because they are primary level domains. Both .edu and .gov were the first domains registered on the internet.

These domains are normally government related sites that is why these links have more value.

Both the domain are very useful regarding any search engine.
To getting the back link from non-commercial websites like .edu, .gov and some ngo sites its make your search engine ranking better until they having pr or not.
So we have to try more link from this type of link to get more ranking on search engine.

I agree with this... Even other domains are useful just depends upon how good the websites are.

Backlinks are very helpful. It allows the reader to see the highlighted word and just hit the text and then gotcha! they will now see your links that you provide in those words. :)

Most likely they carry more authority and trust as they tend to be linked to by higher authority websites and tend to link to spammy websites less frequently.

Difficult to obtain in practice without a significant creative campaign, and overall those links are as valuable as the inbound links to those sites and pages. Being .edu or .gov inherently does not give these websites more value from a link standpoint. The fact that they are .gov and .edu draws links to them - and that is the reason why most .edu and .gov links on quality, trusted contextual pages count for alot.

I highly doubt .edu matters anymore. I'm pretty sure it doesn't. .gov might but irregardless of your budget, getting links on those sites is unfeasible.
