Which one were you using before? And reason to change it?
Maybe something is not in line with your current motherboard.

think of the last program you install before it became freeze then uninstall that program and also install a registry cleaner software coz most of the time when a computer boots some programs boots at the same time which also causes a freeze on your computer. this cleaner organizes the programs so it will boot up properly and no more freezing

Your computer freezing could be a result of a lot of things from software rot or bloated programs. Sometimes we install programs that does not leave our system completely when we uninstall. This results in complications that could cause freezing or slow running PC. You could download the Mirekusoft Install Monitor which will:
    • Maintain a system that remains “clean” without reinstalling • See how big programs are and what changes they make
    • Fix problems caused when old versions of a program do not remove themselves

In a nutshell it uninstalls unwanted programs completely. Takes care of bloated applications, software rot and improves the performance of your PC. you can download @ www.mirekusoft.com/downloads. Or you could find out more about software rot and bloated applications here http://www.mirekusoft.com/dealing-with-software-bloat and http://www.mirekusoft.com/the-problem-of-software-rot

Did it start freezing immediately, or only after you'd been using it for a while, installing programs and so on?

That eliminates a bad cooling fan and lack of heatsink compound, so the problem is probably either something else overheating (make sure the case fan(s) is/are blowing air and there's no dust inside the case) or, as others have said, a bad program.

Intel Pentium 4? That's ancient.. Where did you get a new motherboard for it?
Is your motherboard brand new or you bought it second hand? Which chipset your mobo is based on? Which RAM are you using?

There can be thousands of reason why your system is freezing up.
It could be a faulty mobo or RAM. It could be compatibility issue. It could be your CPU. It could be your PSU. Could be some faulty driver. Or it could be anything..

You ought to provide us with more info
    1) Your motherboard condition, new or second hand
    2) Model of your mother board
    3) Type of RAM, SDRAM or DDR
    4) Type of your CPU, PGA or LGA
    5) List of add-on hardware you have in your system
    6) PSU, how many watts?

If everything was working fine before you changed your motherboard then it sounds for sure like either a problem with the new motherboard, or a problem with the fitting of the new motherboard. Try going back to the old motherboard if you can and see if that stops the freezing. If it does then something's up with the new motherboard. ;)

I agree with this guy, there is a lot of reasons why your system is freezing.
based on my experience, hope it will help someone in the future,
one of its cause is your power supply is overheating, or if you have 2 different type of RAM maybe they are not compatible with each other.
    Hope this will help

you cant just swop out a new motherboard on a pc without problems. Each motherboard has bios and ram that the OS would know about at each boot.
