    First it's canonicalization.
Then, I would say, it's a mean to indicate to the robots who is the owner of a text in order to prevent duplicate content from people who could paste / copy what you have at first released on Internet.

Google uses this concept to allow you to pick which of the URLs on your website
having identical content should be indexed. But the content has to be identical.
This is done by adding a link to the headers of the non-canonical pages.

Having the same content available on both the WWW and non-WWW versions of a domain (such as xyz.com and www.xyz.com) is called canonicalization. While you and I might realize they are in fact the same page, search engines mistake them to be unique pages.

    Hello Claudiajay!!

    How Detect Canonicalization Issues:

    a) Search for site:xyz[dot]com, and site:www[dot]xyz[dot]com.
    b) Similarly for the index and non-index pages.

Is there a difference in Pages Indexed?
If there is a difference, then most likely you have canonicalization issues...

If a page has two or more urls then it will be known as canonical issue. This will be resolved by using permanent redirect to the particular pages using the htaccess codes.

If a page has two or more urls then it will be known as canonical issue. Example our domain open with out www or with www both count Google different URL that why we can with out www url redirect to www. Using htaccess file and 301 permanently redirect.

Having multiple URLs for the same web content is called Canonicalization issue. If your web page opens WWW or non WWW both domains that's a Canonicalization issue. You should do 301 permanent web page redirection to solve this type of issue.

Canonical issues are for pages of your website with the same content.Canonical issue like your website open with non www and www and /index.html but all have same content, so you should use canonical tag. and avoid this issues....
